MAKE UP CLASS 5: IT'S ALL ABOUT THE FOUNDATION...

Hello Readers,

Welcome to another exciting edition of looking good with Sarah. I trust you all had an exciting weekend.

Ok, on to the business of the day, shall we?

FOUNDATION! FOUNDATION!! FOUNDATION!!

When creating the perfect makeup, foundation cannot be omitted. It gives the tan an even, glowing and unblemished look. This is not its only advantage.

Foundation is a great base for eye shadows and blush. Eye shadows have a longer life and better coverage when applied to the lid already covered with a thin layer of foundation. It also creates a gentle protective layer over the skin and prevents dehydration, flaking and contamination.

Foundation is a skin colored cosmetic applied to the face to create an even, uniform color to the complexion, to cover flaws, and sometimes, to change the natural skin tone.

Foundation is used to give skin an even tone, to neutralize red cheeks, broken veins and freckles. It also provides the base for all other makeup; it makes their application easier and provides a surface to which they can adhere.

Textures are available in liquid, cream or solid form. The majority of these are oil- based, for use on dry, normal or combination skin. Water based foundation are specifically for oily skin. Liquid are the finest and therefore lightest of the three textures. They allow the normal skin tone to glow through and also give a smooth and natural look.

The advantage of good foundation

Maximum glow: The latest tendencies in makeup are to accomplish a fresh natural look. This is why products with discrete light coverage and enriched in vitamins and minerals are most popular. Light-reflecting substances play an important part in accomplishing this effect by hiding fine wrinkles and blemishes and giving the face a rested look.

Ask your skin:  Choose a tone in accordance with your own complexion and test it on your cheek bone or earlobe. Apply an even layer lightly patting with your fingers. If the color blends, this is your foundation. When choosing your foundation you should also consider your skin type.

  • ·         For mixed skin type or oily skin, use matting water-based, mousses or sticks with light coverage.
  • ·         For normal skin, use hydrating foundation with transparent or light-reflecting particles.
  • ·         For dry sensitive skin, use hydrating water- based foundation.
  • ·         For dry aging skin, use hydrating and nourishing foundation with anti-ageing properties, long lasting with a high coverage.

Questions and comments are greatly appreciated. Look forward to hearing from you.
Have a great week ahead!!!

MAKE UP CLASS 4: FOUNDATION PRIMER.

Foundation Primer

Foundation primer is a clear, non-greasy gel that creates a barrier between your skin and your foundation. If you have noticed that your foundation has a tendency to highlight fine lines or exaggerate your pores, foundation primer can help.

Primers invisibly fill in wrinkles and pores, creating a smooth, soft surface. This even surface also helps makeup cling to your skin better so it’s less likely to wear off. Smudge, or become shiny during the day. Primers also protect your skin from the damaging effect of sun, wind and pollution.

Makeup experts know the trick to keeping foundation & concealer from melting right off your face. They use a primer first. Makeup primers keep skin hydrated & reduce the amount of oils that will pop up on your skin's surface.

Just like you prime a wall before you paint it, you can prime your face before you apply foundation. They ease the application of foundation.

Primers are an incredibly popular pre-step to foundation application. Foundation primer creates a smooth surface for foundation, filling in pores and fine lines. You'll find out, that your foundation will seem to melt onto your skin, rather than sit on top of it when you apply a primer first.

Choose a primer

Primers are designed to be non-intrusive, so most are colorless and come in forms that let you apply it exactly where you want it. If you plan to apply the primer to your whole face, gel will work great for you. For spot application, stick or compact primer is a better choice.

While all primers do basically the same thing, each brand has its own individual characteristics. If you have dry skin, try Smash box’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer, which is quite moisture rich. If you have oily skin a lighter primer like the one by Laura Mercier Cosmetics will suit you better. Be aware that some women find poor quality and\or oil-based primer cause break outs, so if you tend to get acne, make sure you pick a light, oil-free brand.

Apply foundation primer

Liquid\gel foundation primer can be applied with your fingers or with a makeup brush. If you use a stick or compact foundation primer. For liquid\gel primer, pour a quarter-sizes amount into your hands and massage it into the area of your face where your makeup tends to rub off or where you have problems with shine. For some, this may just be the chin, forehead, lips and eyelids if you are using a primer to minimize pores, though you will want to apply it over the whole face. For the foundation primer to work properly it’s vital that you wait a few minutes to let your skin absorb it. If you apply foundation immediately afterwards, the primer will just get mixed in the foundation and won’t be able to do its job.

Other benefits of foundation primers.
  1. They allow foundation to "stay put" in hot weather.
  2. Help prevent skin from absorbing talc and pigment from your foundation as well as preventing talc from drawing oil from the skin.
  3. They contain botanical such as lavender, orange, jasmine, rose, geranium, grape, kiwi and aloe extracts to soothe and refresh the skin.

MAKE UP CLASS 3: Facial Moisturising.

Why moisturise before putting on foundation?

Moisturiser is basically a base to smoothen and hydrate your skin before applying foundation. It will also help your foundation to stay on smooth and look flawless on your skin.

Without moisturiser, foundation may look cakey and sink in your pores which will block them and eventually you may get clogged pores.

Your skin loses moisture due to the environment and weather. You need to moisturise even if you don’t wear foundation, this protects your skin from nasty environmental hazard and also keeps it hydrated.

The main purpose of doing that is that it evens out your skin's texture so the foundation doesn't sink into your pores making your pores look larger. Also, if your skin is dry, not putting moisturiser can make your skin look ashy.

Putting on a moisturiser before foundation can help protect your skin from the sun, as well as, giving you a clean slate to put your foundation or makeup on. It also will help your makeup last longer throughout the day

It makes your skin soft and helps with dry skin. Plus, some moisturisers have sun screen in them  it helps your skin not age as quickly.

While moisturisers differ in what ingredients they use, most moisturisers have two common components: emollients, which make your skin smoother, and humectants, hold in moisture. The best part is that they both help soften your skin.

Moisturisers can contain a host of other ingredients, such as fragrances, vitamins, botanical extracts, age-fighting compounds and sunscreens.

TIPS AND WARNINGS

Choosing the right moisturiser for your face depends on what type of skin you have, which often can dictate its needs. Some general guidelines are:
  • If you have severely dry skin and the humidity is low, you might want to try a moisturising ointment, because ointments contain the most oil.
  • If you have oily skin, try using a lotion, because these tend to be less greasy than other types of moisturisers.
  • For sensitive skin, try to avoid moisturisers with lots of fragrances and dyes, as these can irritate your skin.
  • Sensitive skin requires a product formulated specifically for sensitive skin. These products are normally fragrance-free and don't contain allergens.
  • Dry skin requires an oil-based, hypo-allergenic moisturiser.
  • Avoid moisturising an inch away from your eyes to avoid irritation.
