MAKE UP CLASS 4: FOUNDATION PRIMER.

Foundation Primer

Foundation primer is a clear, non-greasy gel that creates a barrier between your skin and your foundation. If you have noticed that your foundation has a tendency to highlight fine lines or exaggerate your pores, foundation primer can help.

Primers invisibly fill in wrinkles and pores, creating a smooth, soft surface. This even surface also helps makeup cling to your skin better so it’s less likely to wear off. Smudge, or become shiny during the day. Primers also protect your skin from the damaging effect of sun, wind and pollution.

Makeup experts know the trick to keeping foundation & concealer from melting right off your face. They use a primer first. Makeup primers keep skin hydrated & reduce the amount of oils that will pop up on your skin's surface.

Just like you prime a wall before you paint it, you can prime your face before you apply foundation. They ease the application of foundation.

Primers are an incredibly popular pre-step to foundation application. Foundation primer creates a smooth surface for foundation, filling in pores and fine lines. You'll find out, that your foundation will seem to melt onto your skin, rather than sit on top of it when you apply a primer first.

Choose a primer

Primers are designed to be non-intrusive, so most are colorless and come in forms that let you apply it exactly where you want it. If you plan to apply the primer to your whole face, gel will work great for you. For spot application, stick or compact primer is a better choice.

While all primers do basically the same thing, each brand has its own individual characteristics. If you have dry skin, try Smash box’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer, which is quite moisture rich. If you have oily skin a lighter primer like the one by Laura Mercier Cosmetics will suit you better. Be aware that some women find poor quality and\or oil-based primer cause break outs, so if you tend to get acne, make sure you pick a light, oil-free brand.

Apply foundation primer

Liquid\gel foundation primer can be applied with your fingers or with a makeup brush. If you use a stick or compact foundation primer. For liquid\gel primer, pour a quarter-sizes amount into your hands and massage it into the area of your face where your makeup tends to rub off or where you have problems with shine. For some, this may just be the chin, forehead, lips and eyelids if you are using a primer to minimize pores, though you will want to apply it over the whole face. For the foundation primer to work properly it’s vital that you wait a few minutes to let your skin absorb it. If you apply foundation immediately afterwards, the primer will just get mixed in the foundation and won’t be able to do its job.

Other benefits of foundation primers.
  1. They allow foundation to "stay put" in hot weather.
  2. Help prevent skin from absorbing talc and pigment from your foundation as well as preventing talc from drawing oil from the skin.
  3. They contain botanical such as lavender, orange, jasmine, rose, geranium, grape, kiwi and aloe extracts to soothe and refresh the skin.
